EB Games petitions for R18+ video games classification

AUSTRALIA'S largest video game retailer is lobbying for an R18+ gaming classification.

EB Games has launched a petition, which customers can sign at any of their 350 stores, urging the Government to bring in the tougher classification so that games deemed too graphic for the current MA15+ rating can still be sold.

Despite the average age of a gamer being 30, Australia remains one of the last major territories in the world in which an R18+ rating for gaming does not exist.

As a result, games that fail to get the MA15+ rating are either banned or require editing to pass the Classification's Board's strict guidelines.

Last year the Federal Government released a discussion paper on whether or not an R18+ rating for games should be adopted and called for submissions.

Submissions to the Government close on February 28.

EB Games managing director Steve Wilson said the company started the petition after finding overwhelming support for the tougher rating from customers.

"Our customers have sent us a message loud and clear that this is an issue that needs to be addressed," he said.

"Once this government paper is closed, it could be many years before we get another chance to voice our opinion on this issue."

An EB Games poll on the R-rating attracted more than 50,000 respondents, with 84 per cent voting in favour of an 18+ game rating.

Mr Wilson said the call for an R18+ rating was not to gain access to more violent or sexual content in games.

"This is not a call for violent video games but rather a call for a better classification system that brings Australia in line with the rest of the world and other Australian entertainment industries, such as films," he said.

Recently the Classification Board overturned a decision to ban up-coming title Aliens Vs Predator after game publisher Sega appealed against the decision while refusing to edit the game in any way.

Games edited for Australian players include Left 4 Dead 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV - the latter broke sales records in 2008.

Sydney gamers plan mass censorship protest

Guy Fawkes masks optional.

The censorship awareness group R18+ Games Australia is planning a mass street protest for tomorrow. Gathering at Sydney's iconic Queen Victoria Building from 9am, concerned citizens will mass to draw attention to our draconian censorship laws ― and the submission template which may yet see them overthrown.

"We will be hitting the streets of Sydney to try and make some sort of impact, our goal is to make the public aware of the outdated classification system by handing out information sheets about video games and the proposed classification changes. Also on the day we also want to see how many people we can get to fill out the submission template that the government has asked for."

Gamers In Sydney will assemble at the corner of George st and Druitt st; more details at the official Facebook group.

If you can't make it to the event, you can still take part in the public consultation process; submissions close on February the 28th.

VDD Guild Update - Merry Xmas Edition

Well there you go... who can believe that the society Bone created with a small handful of noobs just over 2 years ago would still be kicking around?

Were coming up on our second xmas as a guild and a lot has happened in the past year. We've seen the closure of our Pirate's chapter, some waaaa'ghing in Warhammer and finally the Van Diemen's Demise corporation emerge from the shadows from The Convicted in EVE Online. On top of all that we've had our usual games of MoW, TF2, Civ4, Arma2 and everything else I cant think of. Plus people have poked their heads into new mmo's like Fallen Earth and Aion! Thats a lot of shit this community's been getting up to!

The Shiny Spoon is still strong in this guild, which means we can keep a great community going despite people not playing in the main mmo chapters. Our fearless spoon leader in Xace, keeps us up to date with the latest happenings in the wide world of spoons. His second in command, Kel, is checking out the beta for Star Trek Online for our eager trekkies amongst the ranks. Speaking of which, its good have Ollie back trolling the VDD forums once again!

On the EVE front were as strong as ever. We've tried our hand at everything you can think of in the never ending search for those precious carebear tears. We've been through war decs, merc contracts (on both sides of the fence), faction warfare, fighting blobs and finally having our first crack as a corp in the big bad world of 0.0!

Whilst were talking EVE, I'd like to thank a few people who've really helped keep this corp ticking along this year. Firstly lets start with the original pirate king, Mr. Aurelius. He got this chapter up and laid the foundation for its future endeavours. Without him there would be no Van Diemen's Demise corporation in EVE. Next up is the guys who help me run this corp day in and day out... guys like Rich, Seth, Eva and Pixel! From diplo work, SSI stuff, logistics to everything else they do, theres no way I could keep this afloat by myself! And finally the members... without you guys the VDD machine wouldnt be what it is!

Now on behalf of all us leader type people in VDD, we wish you a merry xmas and a happy new year with your families. Make sure you eat lots of great food and get stuck into the turps!

New PCU Record of 54,181 pilots

The weather outside is frightful as powerful solar winds buffet the battleworn armor of a Myrmidon aligning for warp. The fire so delightful of the Heavy Pulse Laser IIs as they carve through the hulls of Sansha's despicable followers.

What really warms our hearts this time of year is the recent breaking of our all-time Peak Concurrent User Record. This past Sunday, 54,181 pilots were flying in New Eden, unfettered and unbound but by the limits of their own imagination and skill. Thank you all for flying with us.
